Our history and heritage

Step into Ayr's most iconic landmark. Dating back to 1749, The Tam o' Shanter Inn stands as a living chapter of Scottish literary folklore, immortalised in the verses of Robert Burns. Discover the enduring tales, independent spirit, and heartfelt craft woven into every piece we create.

A legendary setting since 1749

With our thatched roof, rustic exposed wooden beams, and timeworn stone walls, stepping inside The Tam o' Shanter Inn feels like stepping right back into the 18th century. It was from this very alehouse that Tam began his fateful ride home on a stormy winter's night, heading towards Alloway's haunted Auld Kirk in Robert Burns's legendary 1790 masterpiece. We celebrate that historic night every single day, keeping Scotland's rich folklore alive under our rafters.

Wearable folklore inspired by Burns

We created our bespoke clothing line so that guests and Burns enthusiasts worldwide could carry a genuine piece of Scottish history home with them. Each comfortable t-shirt, hoodie, and jumper features thoughtful artwork derived directly from Tam's supernatural adventure. Designed in Ayr with quality fabrics at affordable prices, our apparel celebrates the craft and spirit of Scotland's national bard.

Walt Disney and The Tam O Shanter Inn??

Walt Disney was in fact a huge fan of Scottish poetry and folk tales, he adored Scotlands history and more importantly was a huge fan of the great Robert Burns. In 1966 he released a short film showcasing his new idea for a self sustainable city called 'EPCOT' within the film a familiar image pops up... It just so happens to be our wee pub.

A fresh thatch for an iconic landmark

Last year, we had the traditional thatched roof of The Tam o' Shanter Inn completely redone. The dedicated craftsmen and woman worked diligently through every detail, taking just over two weeks to finish the entire project. Preserving our 18th-century heritage is at the heart of everything we do, and the new master thatch has certainly made our historic pub look a lot nicer and ready to welcome generations of visitors to come.

"Walking into the inn feels like entering the pages of Robert Burns. The atmosphere is completely authentic, and wearing their Tam o' Shanter hoodie back home brings back all the warmth and magic of Ayr."
